Abstract
The goal of this paper is to identify whether Isa 53:4-5 includes the idea of the substitution for healing of diseases or not. Calvin spiritualized the message of healing in this text. Most English Bible versions also translated ylix\ and baok.m; in verse 4 into "grief" and "sorrows," resulting in the spiritual/figurative understanding of the text. However, none of Hebrew dictionaries appears to support this kind of translation. ylix\ and baok.m; simply mean "sickness" and "pain" respectively. Matt 8:17 also understood the meaning of these words in this manner.
In light of this understanding, the message of Isa 53:4-5 may be summarized as follows. First, Christ's piercing and crushing are the vicarious suffering for our sins. Second, Christ's chastisement is the vicarious suffering for restoring the broken relationship between God and us. Third, Christ's scourging is the vicarious suffering for healing of our diseases. The healing (ap'r') in verse 5 includes all three dimensions of healing: the spiritual healing of our sins, the healing of the relationship between God and us, and the physical healing of our diseases. Christ's substitutionary works involve all three levels of the substitution for our sins, our peace, and our healing from sickness.
